Things are really warming up right now! I know that sounds funny, especially since temps are still below freezing, however with the additional daylight (10 hours 54 minutes!), we are consistently warming to the 20s each day this week. What a HUGE difference from 20 below zero last week.

Tonight is expected to be a good opportunity to see the aurora borealis. So far each time we have seen a spectacular show, the prediction rating has been a 2. Well today it's predicted to be a 3! I'm not sure I'll get a chance to see it because I hope to be asleep at 1am.

Good morning. It continues to be rather chilly here in the Interior. Monday morning, we hit 35 below zero. However, there are only 19 days until Spring. I am definitely ready for some warmer weather.

The next seven days looks as like it will be uneventful. Temperatures during the day should be around 10 to 15 above zero. Lows should range from 20 to 30 below zero. The sun should be out in full force!

Good snowy morning! A Winter Storm Warning continues today through 10:00 a.m. Saturday. The NWS is expecting 6-10 inches of snow by the time the storm wraps up. Winds are also quite strong. A gust of 41 MPH was recorded at the Fairbanks airport this morning. With heavy snow and gusty winds, visibility will be reduced on the roads. Please be safe when driving today!

Good morning! The NWS zone map is lit up like a Christmas tree! It looks as if a major winter storm will impact the northern part of Alaska over the next 24 to 36 hours. With a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Fairbanks North Star Borough, the NWS is predicting another 4 to 8 inches of snow by tomorrow evening.

Good morning! Our total snowfall for Sunday and Monday was 17.1 inches (on our back deck). It looks as if the active weather pattern will settle down. The NWS does call for a couple of chances of snow, but nothing like what we saw this week!

Winter Storm Warning Continues!

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 pm AKST this
evening.

Storm total snowfall amounts as much as 12 inches have
fallen over much of the Tanana valley as of 5 am this morning.
Between 9 pm Sunday and 5 am this morning...7 inches of snow fell
At the University of Alaska west ridge as a long band of heavy
snow showers moved across the area. Snow showers...heavy at
times...will continue today with additional snow amounts as much
as 4 inches. Snow showers will taper off tonight with another inch
of snow possible. Storm total snow amounts are expected to be as
much as 16 inches.

In the valleys...southwest winds 15 to 25 mph will develop
this morning and continue through the day...with occasional
gusts to 35 mph. The brisk winds will produce drifting and
blowing snow. Blowing snow may reduce visibility at times.

On the higher summits...southwest winds 30 to 40 mph will produce
significant blowing and drifting snow with whiteout conditions
possible. Travel over higher summits will be difficult or
impossible.

Conditions will gradually improve tonight night as winds
diminish some

Hello SNOW! The next couple of days should be exciting for those who love the white stuff. Hopefully the remaining mushers closing in on the finish line of the Yukon Quest will not be hampered too much by this new low pressure trough moving into the area and can join Dallas Seavey (rookie winner) and others who have arrived in Fairbanks after the 1000 miles journey from Whitehorse.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6pm tonight until noon Friday:
Snow will develop this evening and continue through Friday morning. A total snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is expected by noon Friday. Locally higher amounts in excess of 6 inches are possible on the hills. The snow will taper off to scattered snow showers Friday afternoon.

It's a cold morning! At 8:00 a.m., we are at 43.8 below zero. It should remain cold through Tuesday, but will warm up on Wednesday when we have a chance of snow.

Good morning! If we lived in the Lower 48, we would be in for, yet, another snow storm. From Kansas and Oklahoma to the deep south, snow is blanketing the region. All I can say is this, "I wish it were us!" I am ready for some fresh snow in our area. According to the NWS, we could see some snow this afternoon and tonight. They are calling for up to 2 inches by midnight. I hope they are right on with this one!

We are still looking for much colder temperatures to invade the Interior by the beginning of the weekend. Highs should be between 10 and 15 below zero and lows around 30 to 35 below zero. Hopefully, that part of the forecast will be short-lived and we will be back above zero before too long.

Good morning! Monday was filled with wonderful sunshine! After a long and dark winter, people in the sub-arctic are happy to see that flaming ball of fire light up the sky. As we were driving around Fairbanks, I was almost giddy about getting to wear my sunglasses. Life is good!

We may not need those sunglasses for the next several days, as clouds are starting to roll into the area. It looks as if we will see highs around 15 above today and lows around zero tonight. There is a mention of snow for tomorrow afternoon through Thursday morning. Then, it appears that we may have a cold snap. The NWS is predicting lows of 35 below and highs of 15 below into the weekend.

Good beautiful morning! What an incredible weekend here in the Fairbanks area. We had highs above zero and plenty of sunshine. I am definitely noticing the days getting longer. It seems to energize me and give me hope that Spring is just around the corner. While I know we will not see our grass until May, the warmer temps and the sun are awesome!

The first part of this week looks as if we will continue to see relatively mild temperatures. We should see highs between 10 and 20 above and a chance of snow Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening. However, starting Thursday night, we could see lows back to 35 below zero with highs on Friday of 10 to 15 below. That trend could stay with us next weekend. Hopefully, it will be short-lived!

Good morning! It was a great weekend here in the Interior. We had highs above zero and sunny skies. On Saturday evening, we enjoyed one of our favorite winter sports, UAF Nanook Hockey. The Nooks walloped the Ohio State Buckeyes 6-2. We followed up the victory on Sunday with a hike around Chena Lakes. We have never been to the lake area in the winter. So, we were amazed by all the activities. There were people ice fishing. There were people skijoring. There were snow machiners. In fact, I think we were the only two people with our winter hiking boots on and walking. It was a beautiful day filled with sunshine!

The weather this week looks to be just a promising as the weekend. While there is a mention of snow tomorrow through Wednesday evening, the temperatures should remain above zero during the day and around 10 below zero at night. For the end of January and the beginning of February, I can't complain!

I find it interesting that because New York City received 18 inches of snow yesterday, the news is reporting that "the entire nation is being pounded by snow!"

Now don't get me wrong, I realize that 2 inches of snow per hour is a heavy snow, but to say the entire nation is being pounded by snow seems a bit egocentric to me. In fact, I've been looking forward to getting more snow here in Fairbanks. Though our forecast is looking brighter for the week, meaning we expect temps to rise to 15 degrees above zero, it doesn't look like we will have much precipitation. We won't be getting pummelled, let alone pounded.

Good morning! Tuesday was a beautiful day. We had highs right around zero and it felt wonderful. We took advantage of the warm weather and grilled steaks last night for dinner. I think I could easily get used to the warm temperatures. While I know we still have a long way to go until Spring, the extra daylight and the temps are a welcomed relief. So, if you have the day off or want to call in sick, get out and enjoy this warm spell!

Good chilly morning! It is 42 below, at the moment. This means that we will most definitely have another day of indoor recess. It also means that I will need to wear a coat and mittens this morning.

The last time it was 40 below, I walked into our school without a coat or hand protection. Before you think I'm crazy, I always keep a heavy coat and an emergency bag with thermals, hand warmer, 40 below boots, a scarf, hat, etc. in my car at all times. So, I have the proper gear, if I were to need it. So, anyway, I walked up to the door of our school and grabbed the handle to open the door. As I touched the 40 below metal handle, my skin stuck to the metal and gave me quite a burn! Yes, I learned a very valuable lesson. Always have on gloves or mittens when it's this cold to keep from getting burned.

It looks as if we will start to moderate on Saturday with highs of 10 below. It will warm even more on Monday and we will be above zero!

Good morning! Well, it was another day of indoor recess yesterday. What does that mean? It means that it was too cold for the kids to go outside for recess. In our district, if it is colder than 20 below zero, we stay inside. That equals some very antsy kids! Today and tomorrow look as if we could have the same scenario. The NWS is calling for highs between 20 and 30 below for today and tomorrow. The students will be bouncing off the walls by Friday!

It looks as if we could see a warm up by Sunday with a high of 10 above! That trend looks to continue into early next week. Keep your fingers crossed!

A COLD FRONT STRETCHING FROM CIRCLE TO FAIRBANKS TO MCGRATH AT 6AM THIS MORNING WILL MOVE SOUTH OF THE ALASKA RANGE BY THIS AFTERNOON. THIS FRONT BROUGHT CLOUDS AND FLURRIES ACROSS THE INTERIOR OVERNIGHT. TEMPERATURES WARMED INTO THE TEENS BELOW ZERO OVERNIGHT WITH THE FRONT AS COLD SURFACE AIR IN VALLEYS WAS MIXED OUT BY THE COLD FRONT.

Whew! After a couple of weeks off to focus on feeling better, I think I am ready start blogging about the weather here in the Interior of Alaska. In reflecting about what the weather has been like over the past few weeks, it's all a blur. However, I did notice this weekend was remarkably colder than earlier this month. In fact, yesterday, we did not get above 30 below zero until late last night.

Looking at today, it appears that we will have clearing skies with temperatures falling to between 20 and 30 below. Tonight's lows look to be around 35 below zero. Bundle up and stay warm!

Monday, January 3rd (Happy New Year!)

Good morning! It is back to work this week. When the clock went off at 5:30 this morning, I was hoping it was just a dream and that I could sleep for another couple of hours. But, it was not to be.

The weather over Christmas break was interesting. The week before Christmas we were well below zero and no snow in sight. The week after Christmas, we warmed up above zero and it truly felt warm! On New Year's Eve, there was snow to the north of Fairbanks and it did not look as if North Pole would get anything. However, at 3:00 p.m., it started to snow steadily and rather heavily. By 7:00 p.m., as we were getting ready to go to UAF for the fireworks, we had 2 inches on our snow board! On New Year's Day, we headed up to the White Mountains for a hike and the temperature reached 32 degrees (above zero)! In fact, on Saturday, Delta Junction (which is southeast of Fairbanks) hit 52 degrees. Absolutely amazing!!!

So, what does this week have in store? Today, we should continue to see warm temperatures with highs between 25 and 35. However, by the end of the week, it looks as if we will see more seasonable temperatures as we head back below zero.

Happy Winter Solstice! After recovering from being sick, I thought I would make a quick post. I was out doing my Christmas shopping today and thought the weather was rather delightful. It was 13 below zero and the sun was out in full force (at least as much as it could be on the shortest day of the year). What a beautiful day!

Good Friday morning! We made it to the beginning of the weekend!!!! It's been a very cold week here in North Pole. This morning we are starting off at 41 below zero. Good morning! The Climate Prediction Center came out with it's monthly outlook on temperatures this morning. As you can see from the map, above, we are in the below average range for temperatures for January, February and March.

Also, as I was reading the NWS forecast discussion, I found the following which aligns with the CPC:

THROUGH THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF DECEMBER THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AT FAIRBANKS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WAS -15.9 DEGREES.THIS IS 9.7 DEGREES BELOW THE 30-YEAR AVERAGE AND IS THE COLDEST START TO THE MONTH OF DECEMBER SINCE 2001.

Yesterday, we had a high of 41.1 below zero. Our low, yesterday, was 43.8 below zero. So, we warmed up a whopping 2.7 degrees! Amazing!!!!

For those of you who do not live in Alaska, you should really consider visiting during the winter months. There are so many things you can experience. For example, have your nose hairs ever frozen? Have your lungs ever hurt to breathe in the cold air? Have you ever tried to push a shopping cart across an ice and snow covered parking lot while walking like a penguin? Have you ever driven on "square" tires? If the answer is "no" to most of these questions, then go to the Alaska Airlines website and book yourself a ticket to Fairbanks! These are memories that will last with you for a lifetime!

Good frigid morning! The temperature is hanging out in the low 40 below zero range. As you may or may not know, this is only our second winter here in North Pole. Last year, we did not see a 40 below or colder temperature. So, this is very exciting to us! I know that may seem a bit weird to you, as it does to everyone else we know!

The rest of this week will remain much below normal. Our average for this time of year is 4 above zero for the high and 15 below zero for the low. We should see some slight moderating this weekend when temperatures will reach 20 to 25 below zero fro the highs. Bundle up and stay warm!

Good morning! Yesterday, Mike and I braved the 35 below zero temperatures to go to "Christmas in Ice" in North Pole. While we only lasted for about an hour, it was worth the frozen toes! Our high yesterday, was 34 below zero. However, it has warmed up over night. Currently, we are sitting at 15 below zero with light snow. From the looks of the radar, we could see snow most of the day. We always welcome snow!

The rest of the week looks to be some of the coldest of the season. The NWS is calling for lows between 35 and 45 below. Our coldest low, at our house, has been 37 below. So, we will see if we can break that 40 below mark!

Good morning! We still find ourselves in the deep freeze here in North Pole. So, cold is the word of the day and most likely will be for the foreseeable future.

Since it is a wee bit on the chilly side, we are finding indoor activities. On Monday, my husband decided it would be the best time to decorate the house for Christmas. So, he crawled under the house, found all the Christmas boxes and brought them inside. He set up a small set of spruce trees (fake, of course), hung the garland, hung a few ornaments and then cleaned the mess. Wow! I didn't have to do anything! I am so thankful, because decorating for Christmas is one of my least favorite activities. Now, our house his "festive" and ready for any unexpected visitors. I hope you have had a chance to do your decorating or at least find someone to do it for you!

Good morning! It's somewhat humorous for me to watch the news from the Lower 48 and see the reports on "The Arctic Blast!" affecting the Eastern half of the country. Temperatures below freezing and snow falling. It makes me laugh because I remember when we lived in Florida and Alabama and it would get cold (you know, like 20 degrees). We would bundle up and think that the world was ending if we didn't get a cup of hot chocolate. I also laugh because we are currently at 26 below zero here in North Pole. Now that's cold! I also get a big chuckle when it gets to 20 above here, because the kids are running around in short sleeves. I guess it's all about perspective. Wherever you are, I hope you have a fire to keep you warm and a cup of hot chocolate to keep you alive.

Speaking of cold snaps, it appears that our below zero temperatures are continuing through the next seven days. There are no signs of snow in the near future. We will see clear skies through Thursday and then the clouds roll in. Highs should be between 15 and 20 below zero and lows should range between 25 and 35 below zero.

Good morning! I cannot believe that we are really in the month of December! Yes, it's below zero outside and the daylight hours are only 4 hours and 16 minutes. That should make it feel like December, but it seems like summer was just here and we were all wearing shorts. Regardless, we have exactly 19 days until Christmas. I hope you have a dent in your shopping list, because I don't. I really need to think about getting some shopping done, as all of our gifts need to be shipped.

Okay, enough rambling and onto weather. This week, according to the NWS, should be rather uneventful. We will see partly cloudy to mostly clear skies all week. Temperatures will be well below zero. Highs should range from 10 below to 20 below zero and lows between 20 below zero to 30 below zero. There's not much else to say other than a big thank you to the ridge over ADAK for the clear skies and cold temps!

Good morning! We have warmed ever so slightly overnight. We are now at 29 below zero instead of the 35 below zero when I went to bed last night. We should continue moderating over the next several days. Eventually, temperatures will top out at around zero. Not too bad for the first of December!

The NWS is also calling for scattered snow showers from Friday night through Saturday night. At this point, it does not appear to be anything significant. Most likely, it will be very light and something pretty to watch.

If you are in the Fairbanks area this weekend, be sure to stop by West Valley High School for the Tanana Valley Farmer's Market Christmas Bazaar. It will be on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All vendors are selling certified "Made in Alaska" products. It will be a great venue to find a few Christmas gifts!

Good bone-chilling morning! It is the coldest morning of the season in North Pole this morning. After a high on Monday of 24 below zero, we are currently sitting at 36 below zero and haven't budged in the last few hours. With clear skies, we are definitely in the deep freeze!

Temperatures should begin to moderate somewhat by Thursday. Instead of highs between 20 and 30 below zero, we should see highs around zero. While you may think that this is not that significant, it is! When you warm up 20 to 30 degrees, you definitely can feel the difference.

Good morning! Last week was certainly a long one with the freezing rain and icy roads. I'm happy to say that is behind us and we are now settling into a week of below zero temperatures. I find it quite amazing that one week ago today we were sitting at 32.5 degrees above zero and at this very moment we are 55 degrees colder!

This week looks rather tranquil in comparison of last week. We should see partly cloudy skies through Thursday with highs between 10 and 20 below zero and lows between 20 and 35 below zero. Bundle up and be sure to plug in your car!

Good morning! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and had lots of good food and fun. Here in the Interior, we survived the freezing rain and icy roads. In fact, this rain event was the worst since 1936!

I was just checking the DOT website (http://511.alaska.gov/alaska511/mappingcomponent) for road conditions. As of 8:00 a.m., travel is not advised in the greater Fairbanks area. There were several accidents noted on the map, as well. So, if you decide to get out and about, please take it slow and be very careful.

We did have some snow over the last 24 hours. I have not measured, but I would guess it would be close to 1 1/2 to 2 inches. The NWS is predicting a few snow showers for today and by the weekend, it will be much colder.

After two days of rain and freezing rain, the end is in sight. We should see periods of freezing rain today mixing with snow this afternoon. Tonight we will see some snow showers. Areas north and west of Fairbanks could see up to 2 inches of snow.

Thanksgiving Day will be cooler than the past few days. Highs should top out in the 20's with snow likely. According to the NWS, we could see 1 to 2 inches of snow.

By the weekend, temperatures begin to plummet to below zero for lows and around zero for highs.

AN EXTREMELY WARM AND MOIST AIR MASS MOVING AROUND A LARGE HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER THE NORTH PACIFIC WILL CONTINUE TO BRING WIDESPREAD RAIN AND FREEZING RAIN TO INTERIOR ALASKA.

RAINFALL AMOUNTS EXCEEDING ONE INCH ARE POSSIBLE IN FAIRBANKS AND THE REMAINDER OF THE CENTRAL INTERIOR THROUGH WEDNESDAY. THIS AMOUNT OF RAIN IS EXPECTED TO RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT COMPACTING AND MELTING OF THE LOCAL SNOW PACK OVER THE NEXT TWO DAYS.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT RUNOFF FROM RAIN AND MELTING SNOW WILL CAUSE PONDING OF WATER ON ROADWAYS AND OTHER POOR DRAINAGE AREAS AND LOW SPOTS. SIGNIFICANT OVERFLOW IS ALSO EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ON LAKES AND RIVERS...AND SOME SMALL STREAMS AND CREEKS MAY EXPERIENCE ELEVATED WATER LEVELS.

THIS IS AN EXTRAORDINARY EVENT FOR INTERIOR ALASKA. RAIN DURING THE WINTER IN FAIRBANKS IS UNUSUAL...BUT WHEN IT DOES OCCUR AMOUNTS ARE TYPICALLY VERY LIGHT. HOWEVER...RAIN AMOUNTS IN EXCESS OF A QUARTER INCH OF RAIN...EVEN OVER SEVERAL DAYS...ANYTIME BETWEEN MID-NOVEMBER AND EARLY APRIL ARE EXTREMELY RARE. THE LAST TIME FAIRBANKS HAD THAT MUCH RAIN DURING THE WINTER WAS IN FEBRUARY 2003...WHEN 0.29 INCHES OF RAIN FELL BETWEEN THE 8TH AND 10TH. THE ONLY OCCURRENCE DURING THE SECOND HALF OF NOVEMBER OF SO MUCH RAIN WAS ON NOVEMBER 24 1936...WHEN 0.42 INCHES OF RAIN FELL. THE GREATEST WINTER RAINFALL OF RECORD IN FAIRBANKS OCCURRED ON JANUARY 20 1937...WHEN AN AMAZING 0.99 INCHES OF RAIN FELL ON TOP OF THE 25 INCHES OF SNOW THAT HAD FALLEN ON THE TWO PREVIOUS DAYS.

Okay, I stand corrected and am in total shock. If you read my last post, I thought that our snow total from last night's storm would be well under 1 inch. After I sent my husband out into the cold to measure, he came back in with his report. Are you ready for this? It was a whopping 1.8 inches! I would have NEVER guessed it would have been that much. Good morning and it's Friday! If you are in the Fairbanks area, the UAF Nanooks will be taking on Northern Michigan University in hockey at the Carlson Center tonight. It starts at 7:30 p.m. Nanook hockey is always a lot of fun!

We are starting the morning off with mostly cloudy skies. We did not get as much snow as some parts of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. It really didn't even begin to snow until late afternoon here in North Pole. While I have not taken a measurement, my guess is we had well under an inch.

Today, we will continue to see cloudy skies with highs in the upper teens. The NWS is still calling for highs around 30 or 35 on both Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully, we will not see the warm up and it will stay well below freezing.

Good morning! It has warmed up and it looks like we may have some snow on the way. Areas to the North and East of Fairbanks are under a Winter Weather Advisory until 6:00 a.m. Friday. Snow totals could reach between 2 and 5 inches with the heaviest amounts in those North and East areas of the borough. Either way, it should make for a beautiful day!

With the weekend approaching, it appears that we will still have highs between 25 and 30 on Saturday and on Sunday a chance of snow coming into the picture. As it stands now, there is no mention of any cold air coming into our area throughout the 7 day forecast period. It seems that it will remain rather mild (by Alaskan standards).

Fairbanks' climate is usually classified as subarctic with long, bitterly cold winters, and short, warm summers, in which much of the annual precipitation falls. In Fairbanks, winter lasts from late September/early October until late April/early May. October thru January are the snowiest, and snow is limited from February to May. On average, the season's first snow falls in Fairbanks on September 21 and the first inch of snow accumulates by October 8. The snow pack is established by October 18, on average, and remains until May.

The highest recorded temperature in Fairbanks was 99 °F, while the lowest was −66 °F. The warmest year in Fairbanks was 1981, when the average annual temperature was 32.0 °F. The coldest year was 1956, which averaged a low of 21.3 °F.

Roller coaster. That's the first word that comes to mind when I finished reading the NWS's forecast this morning. Currently, we are sitting at 13 below zero (much warmer than predicted). So, we've hit the bottom of this roller coaster ride and now we are headed back up. Way up!

If the NWS is correct in their forecast, we will see temperatures up near 30 degrees by Saturday! They predict this trend to continue throughout the rest of the 7 day forecast period. Personally, I hope they are wrong. I do not look forward to a warming period followed by another cold snap followed by who knows what. I want off this roller coaster!

Another fun fact about Alaska:
Alaska has 17 of the 20 highest mountains in North America. Mt McKinley (Denali) is the highest at 20,320 ft, second is Mt Saint Elias, near Glennallen, at 18,008 ft. and Alaska has 15 National Parks.

Good chilly morning! We are starting the morning off with temperatures below zero and most likely will not see much of an increase throughout the day. We should see some clearing from the west as the day progresses.

Overnight, the temperatures will plummet to about 10 below zero in the hills to 30 below zero in the valleys. Wednesday looks to be a bit warmer with highs around zero and increasing clouds. The rest of the week will be warmer, cloudy and snowy.

Speaking of snow, did you know that the heaviest annual snowfall was 974.5 inches at Thompson Pass near Valdez during the winter of 1952-53? Wow! That is over 81 feet of snow!

Good morning! Thursday brought us mostly cloudy skies and a high temperature of 20 degrees. We have not cooled that much over night. This morning, we are sitting at 19 degrees. Today's forecast from the NWS expects mostly cloudy skies with a chance of flurries this afternoon and highs between 20 and 25. Tonight we will see more flurries with lows between 5 and 15 above 0.

If you read this blog and are not from Alaska, there are many interesting facts about the 49th state. Since I have only been living here just over 1 1/2 years, I am still learning many of these trivial trivialities. Here is one that may interest you.

Juneau (population of about 31,262) is the only state capital in the US with no road access. It can only be reached by air or sea.

Happy Veteran's Day! I hope you take time today to thank our military for their service to our country. They sacrifice so much for our freedom.

The weather today will be rather tranquil. We should see clouds on the increase with highs in the teens. Friday will be a replica of today with cloudy skies and highs in the mid teens. By Saturday, a weak low will move into the area and bring a chance of snow. From the NWS forecast discussion, this low does not look that impressive. If we get an inch of fresh powder, I think we will be doing good.

At the end of the seven day forecast, there is a mention of a deep closed ridge developing which could allow for the coldest temperatures of the season to filter into the Interior. If this holds true, we could see high temperatures 10 below zero to 20 below zero.

Good morning! We had a steady, light, all day snow on Sunday, which led to 0.8 inches of fresh powder. Monday gave us cloudy skies with a high of 18 degrees.

Today appears to be much like Monday. The NWS believes we will see cloudy skies with a chance of flurries and highs between 15 and 20 degrees. Wednesday and Thursday will be similar to today. However, on Friday, we begin to see a chance of snow that may last through the weekend. Of course, as I always say, Alaskan weather can change on a dime. We will have to wait and see.

Good morning! What a warm Thursday we experienced in North Pole! We had a high of 36 degrees. For the beginning of November, this is very warm. Our average high is 16 degrees and the average low is 1 below zero. So, we were definitely above average, yesterday.

We will remain a little above average today. We should see decreasing clouds this afternoon with highs reaching between 20 and 25 degrees. Tonight we will see increasing clouds after midnight and a low between 0 and 5 above zero.

The rest of the seven day forecast looks rather uneventful. Since the jet stream is running well south of Alaska, we will not see any major outbreaks of precipitation, as it is pull all the moisture well south of us. As I have said many times, this forecast is subject to change. The NWS forecast changes from update to update. So, we will just have to wait and see what happens.

As I was listening to our local news last night, I heard an interesting weather fact about the state of Alaska. Okay, are you ready for this? The coldest temperature ever recorded in the United States of Alaska was in Prospect Creek, Alaska. Prospect Creek is 180 miles north of Fairbanks. The temperature on January 23, 1971 was 80 below zero! Brrrr, that's cold!

If you are waking up with red eyes and an extra cup of coffee, you must have stayed up to watch the election results. Unfortunately, the weather in the Interior of Alaska is not nearly as exciting as our senate race. Today we will see increasing clouds with highs between 20 and 30. Tonight there is a SLIGHT chance of snow with lows between 10 and 15 degrees.

Good Morning! We had a gorgeous weekend in North Pole, Alaska! After last week's snow, we had beautiful sunshine both Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures topped out at 21 on Saturday. With the clear skies, our low on Sunday was 8 below zero. Mike and I decided to get out and enjoy the sunny skies with a hike at Chena Lakes. Below the 7 day forecast, you can see pictures of our outing.

The NWS has backed off their thought of very cold air filling into the Interior this week. A ridge is forming in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory. This will lead to a southerly flow and moderate temperatures for us in the Central Interior for the next 7 days.

We should see mostly cloudy skies today with highs ranging from 15 to 30 degrees. The NWS does mention a chance of snow beginning Wednesday evening and lasting through Friday. We will just have to wait and see how this plays out. While I completely trust the NWS and their forecasting models, things do seem to change from run to run!

Good morning! As always, things change. Time changes. People change. And, weather changes. While yesterday morning, the NWS called for 4 inches of snow between last night and today, that has changed. Now we are looking at a rather weak snow event. If we are lucky, we may get 2 inches of snow.

What happened? I don't know. But here is an excerpt from the NWS forecast discussion:

THE CHINOOK FLOW ENDED ACROSS THE EASTERN AK RANGE LAST EVENING. THE LOW MOVING THROUGH THE COPPER RIVER BASIN LATER THIS MORNING AND INTO CANADA THIS EVENING WILL SPREAD SOME SNOW INTO PARTS OF THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN INTERIOR TODAY INTO TONIGHT AND WILL BE AIDED BY A SHORTWAVE UPPER TROUGH THAT ROTATES THROUGH AROUND THE PARENT LOW IN THE BERING SEA. MOST THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN INTERIOR WILL PICK UP 1-3 INCHES OF SNOW THROUGH TONIGHT WITH A BIT MORE POSSIBLE ACROSS PARTS OF THE AK RANGE WHERE THERE WILL BE SOME WEAK UPSLOPE FLOW. Good morning! We are starting off rather mild this morning. While initially the NWS called for cooler temperatures today, they have decided that highs today will be between 30 and 40 degrees. The Chinook flow (which they predicted would weaken today) will remain in place much of the day, then weaken this afternoon. Therefore, we should see temperatures falling this afternoon. With the falling temperatures, we will see snow push in from the west overnight tonight. There is the potential for up to 4 inches of snow by tomorrow afternoon.

The seven day outlook has not changed much. It looks as if a cold air mass will slide in here by the middle of next week. If this holds true, we may only see highs in the single digits with lows below zero.

Good morning! We are off to a chilly start this morning. With patchy fog in the area, our temperature is 2 degrees. Today should be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 20's.

It looks as if our Chinook flow will weaken on Thursday, which will result in snow filling into our area on Thursday night and into Friday. If this holds true, we could see 2 to 4 inches in the Fairbanks area!

Below the current conditions is the 7 day outlook. Note the much cooler air filtering in here by the beginning of next week!

The rest of the week will have mostly cloudy skies with temperatures between 25 and 35. There is a mention of a chance of snow by Friday. The biggest change comes at the end of the 7 day forecast. The NWS is calling for highs of 15 degrees by next Monday.

Good morning! We have had abundant sunshine the past few days. With highs in the upper 30's and low 40's, some snow melting has taken place. Today should see clear skies with highs in the 30's. Skies should remain clear tonight with lows from zero to 10 above.

While reading the forecast put out by the NWS, it appears that there is no dramatically cold air in the foreseeable future. They predict highs to be around 35 throughout the 7-day forecast period with lows around 20 and no precipitation. For the end of October, this is quite above average.

Good morning! We had periods of snow yesterday and overnight. However, I have not been outside to measure the depth. It did not look like much, though.

Today we will warm up to the mid 30's with scattered flurries in Fairbanks and North Pole. Areas north of Fox will see moderate to heavy snow with 2 inches of accumulation. Tonight we will have mostly cloudy skies with a low around 15 degrees.

The rest of the week looks fairly tranquil. Skies should clear out by Wednesday afternoon and we will see highs between 30 and 35 with lows around 15. This trend should last through the weekend.

Good morning. It was a beautiful weekend in the Fairbanks area. We had plenty of sunshine and some mild temperatures. Saturday's low was 6 degrees, but it quickly warmed up to around 30 degrees. On Sunday, we had a low of 17 degrees but warmed to 36 degrees.

Today, we are starting off with cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 20's. The NWS is calling for a chance of snow showers today through Tuesday night. Temperatures today should top out in the 30's. Lows tonight will be between 10 and 20 degrees. Tuesday should see temperatures between 30 and 35.

The rest of the week looks fairly uneventful. We will have partly to mostly cloudy skies with temperatures between 25 and 30 during the day and 5 to 15 at night. There is no real threat of arctic air coming into the picture any time soon.

On a side note, the Climate Prediction Center comes out with it's 90 day outlook on Thursday. It should be interesting to see if it deviates from the last forecast.

Good morning! We had a roller coaster ride last evening with our temperatures. At 6:30 p.m. we had fallen to 17 degrees after having a high of 27. By 9:30 p.m., we had dropped all the way to 6 degrees. Yes! Six degrees!

At that time, I said good night to my outdoor thermometer and headed to bed with the thoughts of below zero temperatures. I snuggled deep under the covers and turned on my electric blanket excited to wake up to some rather chilly temps.

Well, 6 degrees is as cold as we got. By 3:30 a.m., the clouds has started rolling in and it warmed up to 13 degrees. At 6:00, when I finally rolled out of bed, it had warmed to 18 degrees. So much for our first below zero temperature of the season!

However, we may have another shot at sub zero temps tonight and Saturday night. If the skies clear, we could be around 5 below tonight and again on Saturday.

Highs today and tomorrow should be between 20 and 30 degrees with no snow in the forecast. Sunday and Monday will see highs around 30 degrees.

The extended forecast will be interesting, as the NWS believes some ridging will build in by the middle of next week and bring a little warming to the Interior with highs in the mid 30's.

Good morning! Wednesday was a great day here in the Interior. We saw a high of 28 degrees with cloudy skies. There was no snow to speak of, except what it is on the ground. Today, we should see some clearing by the afternoon with a high around 25 degrees. Tonight will see clear skies and lows between 0 and 10 above.

Friday will continue with clear skies and plenty of sunshine. We should see highs around 20 degrees. The clear skies will continue on Friday night with a low around 0 degrees. However, the Geophysical Institute is predicting a 2 for the Aurora Borealis for overnight Friday. So, if you are up at any odd hour of the night and want to freeze your toes, head on outside and take a quick look for the Northern Lights.

The weekend looks to be a bit warmer. Highs on Saturday should top out around 30 degrees and Sunday should be around 35 degrees. The NWS is calling for a chance of snow on Sunday through Tuesday night. I am not sure if this will pan out, as they have been very wishy-washy on the idea. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Good morning! Tuesday had quite a surprise for everyone in the Interior. It started snowing around 9:30 a.m. and did not quit until around 7:00 p.m. With temperatures hovering around 32 degrees, we had nine-tenths of an inch of snow, as of 5:30 p.m. This was never mentioned by the NWS in the forecast or in the forecast discussion. I think this one caught everyone off guard!

As it looks now, today will bring mostly cloudy skies with highs between 30 and 35 degrees. So, some melting will occur, but not for long. Tonight will see some clearing and lows between 5 and 10 degrees.

Thursday through Saturday appears that we will have mostly clear skies with highs around 25. Lows should average around 5 to 10 degrees.

Good morning! The drive to work yesterday morning was a bit icy. I partially slid through a stop sign. I am thinking it may be time to put on my snow tires! I plan to leave a little early this morning, as we are having some flurries.

The NWS is calling for patchy fog this morning and mostly cloudy skies with highs between 30 and 35. Mostly cloudy skies will hang on for tonight with lows between 10 and 20.

It appears that on Wednesday we will see some partial clearing. Highs should be around 25 and lows around 5.

The extended forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with highs around 30 and lows around 15. The NWS does mention a chance of snow on Sunday and Sunday night. We will have to wait and see how that plays out.

Good morning! We had an awesome weekend here in the Interior. Saturday had an abundance of sunshine with a high of 35. Sunday was, perhaps, the most fun day of the weekend. We had light snow most of the day. While the amount of snow was not that impressive, it was certainly a lot of fun to watch!

Today we will see mostly cloudy skies with highs between 30 and 35. Lows tonight will be between 15 and 25. Tuesday should be a repeat of today.

Wednesday, we will see some clearing with highs between 30 and 35 and lows around 5 to 10 degrees.

Thursday and Friday will see an increase in clouds with highs around 30 degrees and lows around 15.

Next weekend bears some watching, as the NWS predicts some ridging taking place which will result in warmer temperatures. At this point, they are predicting highs between 40 and 45 for Saturday and Sunday. For those of us who are ready for more cold and snow, this does not look good.

Good morning! We had our first snowflakes of the season yesterday. It began to snow around 9:30 a.m. and lasted well into the afternoon. There was no accumulation, as the ground is still too warm. However, it was a lot of fun to watch.

Today we will see mostly cloudy skies with some snow showers north and east of Fairbanks and highs between 35 and 40. Tonight the low will be between 15 and 20 with isolated snow showers. Friday looks to be a repeat of today.

The weekend should be mostly cloudy with highs around 35 and lows between 15 and 20.

Snow? Could there be snow? Only God knows. However, the NWS believes that we have a decent chance to see a few snowflakes over the next few days. For today, the thought is we will have a mix of rain and snow this afternoon with highs in the upper 30's. The best chance of any accumulating snow will be in the hills north and east of Fairbanks, where there can be up to an inch.

Tonight will bring more scattered rain and snow showers. No accumulation is expected in the valleys with lows around 30.

For Thursday, there is a 50% chance of snow showers with a high around 35.

For the rest of the week and into the weekend, the skies will be mostly cloudy with highs between 30 and 35. There is a mention of a chance of snow on Sunday.

Good morning! Monday was a nice day here in the Interior. We had a high of 58 degrees with partly sunny skies. Today appears to be somewhat similar, only a wee bit cooler. For today, the NWS believes our high will be between 40 and 50 degrees with partly cloudy skies. Tonight will see an increase in clouds with lows around 25 degrees.

Okay, here is where the forecast gets a little more exciting. Starting tomorrow (Wednesday), the NWS is calling for scattered rain AND snow showers (Yes, I said "SNOW!) in the afternoon with highs between 35 and 45 degrees. Wednesday night should bring a chance of snow with lows between 20 and 30 degrees.

For the rest of the work week, there is a chance of snow on Thursday and Thursday night. Highs should be between 30 and 35 with lows around 20. Friday will turn mostly cloudy with highs in the upper 30's.

The weekend will be mostly cloudy with highs in the low 30's on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday should present a chance of snow. Lows will average around 20.

Good morning! It was a gorgeous weekend here in the Interior. We had highs near 60 degrees both Saturday and Sunday. I took advantage of the nice weather and finished my fall cleaning. This included taking screens off the windows and washing them both inside and out. I seriously thought about raking leaves (at least for a millisecond), but talked myself out of it.

The National Weather Service is calling for partly to mostly cloudy skies for most of this week. Temperatures will top out in the 40's and bottom out in the 20's. However, by the weekend, we should see highs in the mid 30's, which is much more seasonable.

Depressing. That is the word that comes to mind if you are one of the people hoping for snow this week.

Unlikely. That is the word that comes to mind in thinking that the warm Chinook will ease up any time soon.

So, in a nutshell, the next seven days should see mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the upper 40's to mid 50's and lows in the mid 30's. Where did our wonderful Alaskan winter go? I'm sure that it will return, but when?

Good morning! Monday gave us abundant sunshine with a high of 34 degrees. We bottomed out at 11 degrees around 7:00 a.m. Today appears to be a little warmer. The NWS is calling for highs between 35 and 40 degrees with sunny skies. Tonight should be clear with lows between 10 and 20 degrees.

After today, the weather pattern seems to be shifting. The NWS believes that there will be some snow lifting north tomorrow from the Alaska Range that can reach as far north as Fairbanks. However, after tomorrow a Chinook wind will bring very warm temperatures into our area. They are thinking that we could have highs of around 45 to 50 degrees by Thursday. That trend could continue into the weekend. That is way above average for the end of September.

Good morning! We had a very chilly weekend here in North Pole. Our highs did not get out of the 30's Saturday or Sunday. Saturday's high was 37 and the low was 18. Sunday's high was 38 and the low was 21. Out at Eielson Air Force Base (15 miles southeast of North Pole), there were reports of snow showers on Sunday!

Today appears to be very similar to the weekend. We should have highs in the mid 30's. However, lows will bottom out tonight to between 5 degrees and 15 degrees. The coldest temperatures will be in the valleys.

The NWS seems to be a bit wishy-washy for the rest of the week. Yesterday, they were forecasting highs in the low 30's with a chance of snow from Wednesday through the weekend. Today, they have upped the temperatures to around 40 with a chance of rain. We will just have to wait and see how it plays out. Personally, I am hoping for snow!

However, that could change and probably will change as we head towards the first of October.

Good morning! Well, the change from our Indian Summer to Fall has officially and figuratively happened. While technically, we have a few more hours of summer left, the transition has begun here in the Interior. Temperatures this morning are in the low 30's. While that is not unusual from the last few mornings, our highs today will only be around 40 to 45. This is a far cry from the 60's and 70's we've seen all month. The NWS's 7 day forecast calls for sunny to partly cloudy skies with highs in the low 40's and lows in the teens and low 20's.

Good morning! I took Monday off from writing and from work! Mike and I spent the weekend moose hunting up near Minto, Alaska. Minto is an Athabascan Indian Village about 140 miles northwest of North Pole. For those of you unfamiliar with the road system here in Alaska, many places are not accessible by road, but only by plane or boat. Well, Minto is one of those places that is accessible by road, if you can call it a road. The road to Minto is a dirt/gravel combination for about the last 50 miles. The ruts in the road are incredibly deep and very bumpy. I must say, part of the fun of this trip was actually getting there and get out of there!

The weather was awesome during our trip. We had lows in the 30's and highs in the 50's. Sunshine was abundant. Unfortunately, the moose were not. We called and we called. However, we did not see the first moose. With that said, it was very nice to sit out in the woods and hear the birds chirping and wind rustling the leaves. The leaves are just getting past their peak, but still beautiful. Also, the moon is almost full and we had some good views of the moon rising.

Okay, enough of my rambling about our trip. The weather pattern is quickly shifting. The ridge that has been bringing an incredibly warm Indian Summer to the Interior is leaving us. This is allowing for much cooler weather to filter in here by tomorrow. Highs will go from the 60's and 70's to the 40's. Wow! Can you say, "Change????" According to the NWS, highs and lows for the next seven days will be in the mid 40's and mid 20's.

TGIF! We have made it through another week and the weekend is upon us! The weather has been very tranquil for the last few weeks and appears to continue to be the trend through the weekend and into early next week. The NWS is calling for mostly clear skies with temperatures in the 60's during the day and the 30's overnight.

I have borrowed this excerpt from the NWS's Forecast Discussion that was posted at 5:00 a.m.:

LEGITIMATELY COLD AIR IS PROGGED TO MOVE SOUTH FROM THE NORTH POLE
AND THEN SLIDE DOWN THE WEST COAST BY THE END OF MID RANGE WITH A
520 LOW SUPPLYING THE ENERGY. THIS IS A CHANGE FROM THE PREVIOUS
MODEL RUN FROM THE GFS. THIS IS ACTUALLY MORE IN LINE WITH THE
ECMWF. THIS OF COURSE REMAINS TO BE SEEN BUT IF THIS DOES PAN OUT
THEN IT WILL BECOME A QUICK TRANSITION FROM INDIAN SUMMER TO FALL.

If this holds true, we could be in for some cooler temperatures at the end of the mid-range forecast. I must say, while I have been enjoying the sun and warm weather, I am ready for some fall-like temps!

Good morning! Wednesday was a gorgeous day in my neck of the woods! We had a high of 65 degrees and plenty of warm rays of sunshine. Today promises to be very similar. The NWS is calling for a high of 65 and partly cloudy skies. The weekend is still looking to be dry, sunny and warm with highs in the low 60's and lows in the upper 20's and low 30's.

The Climate Prediction Center has come out with an update on the short-term and long range outlooks. As you can see from the image above, October looks to be a little on the warm side. However, you can click on the link below to see that in November we should turn colder and actually be below average.

Good morning! Tuesday was a wonderful fall day! We had a high of 69 degrees here in North Pole. While we are having chilly mornings, the days are warming up nicely. Today will not be any different than the past few days.

The NWS is calling for a highs between 65 and 70 for today and tomorrow. Lows should range between 30 and 40. The weekend appears to be a nice one. Highs should be around 60 degrees with an abundance of sunshine.

After reading the NWS's forecast discussion, they are predicting that the ridge that has kept us warm and sunny for most of the month, will break down by the end of next week. This should bring more seasonable temperatures to our area. So, get out there and enjoy the sun and warm temperatures while you can!

Good morning! Monday was an incredible day here in the Interior. We had a high of 68 degrees with plenty of sunshine! This is so unusual for the middle of September. The NWS is still calling for warm temperatures throughout the rest of the week and into the weekend. We should have sunny skies with highs between 60 and 70 and lows between 30 and 40.

Tonight, Mike and I meet with the NWS in Fairbanks to get snow measuring equipment for the winter. This should be a lot of fun and very interesting. I will be posting for on this tomorrow.
